The best time to visit Tanzania depends on what wildlife you plan to see and what activities you want to engage in. The population of wild animals and the timing for climbing Kilimanjaro are influenced by the weather and rainfall, so you can have different experiences throughout the year. The calving season in February will be significantly different from the autumnal great migration of animals from Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to Masai Mara in Kenya.
Below, we can see how the temperature and rainfall change, and what we can expect.
SAFARI
There is a chance of rain, but generally, if it does rain, it usually happens in the afternoon. Temperatures will rise, along with humidity. During this time, the migratory herds will be in the southeastern part of Serengeti, in the midst of the calving season, which is an incredible experience in itself. It's also a great opportunity to see thousands of migratory birds.
KILIMANJARO
January and February are the two best months for climbing Kilimanjaro because temperatures are highest and you have the best chances of clear skies. It's recommended to book your trip for January and February well in advance as they are peak months.
ZANZIBAR
This could very well be the best time to visit the paradise island. Not only are the days hot and sunny, but the water is also at its clearest, making it perfect for snorkeling and diving.
SAFARI
Migrating herds begin to leave the Ndutu plains towards Grumeti, although due to the rains, herd movement might be a bit unpredictable. While March and April are considered off-peak months, a significant advantage of traveling during this time is that the parks are much quieter, allowing for peaceful wildlife observation.
KILIMANDŻARO
March is a great month to enjoy the mountains without other tourists before the rainy season really starts in April.
ZANZIBAR
Starting from mid-March, it can get quite wet with frequent rainfalls. March and April aren't suitable for lazing on the beach.
SAFARI
Heavy rains in April give way to sun, causing the lush grass to grow, which can make spotting wildlife more challenging. This is a great period for bird photography enthusiasts. Most migrating herds will likely be in the Grumeti region, ready to take on the first real challenge: crossing the Grumeti River.
KILIMANDŻARO
May and June are not recommended for Kilimanjaro climbs due to the high likelihood of rain. The wet, muddy, and often snowy trails add an extra challenge to the demanding climb.
ZANZIBAR
In May, you can also expect rain, but in June, the rains subside, and you can look forward to long, sunny, hot days. Short, passing showers can still occur, offering a good excuse for a siesta.
SAFARI
We are now at the beginning of the tourist season. Migration is happening in the northern Serengeti, and elephants are gathering in Tarangire. As the land dries up, it becomes easier to spot wild animals. As we approach August and water becomes scarcer, animal behaviors become even more predictable. Between July and September, it's also the time to observe the great migration crossing the Mara River.
KILIMANDŻARO
The rainy season has passed, but expect occasional showers. During these months, there's a high likelihood of having clear, blue skies during the climb. However, be prepared for cold weather!
ZANZIBAR
Although there's still a chance of brief showers, it's a great time to relax on one of Zanzibar's many beautiful beaches.
SAFARI
The great migration is now happening in the northern Serengeti, with herds on both sides of the Tanzania-Kenya border. Expect more tourists in the northern part of Serengeti. In late October and early November, wildebeest move to the eastern borders of Serengeti, passing through the Namiri plains, an area known for exceptional cheetah sightings.
KILIMANDŻARO
Ideal time for climbing. Chances of rain are low, but always be prepared for changes in mountain weather!
ZANZIBAR
Still a great time to visit Zanzibar, although there might be more rain towards the end of October.
SAFARI
November marks the start of a short rainy season, mostly occurring at night. Parks will be less crowded. In December, tourists return to the parks, particularly during the holiday season. As the great migration nears its end for the year, herds are likely to move to the eastern and southern Serengeti, returning to the Ndutu plains, ready for another calving season. The circle of life begins anew in January.
KILIMANDŻARO
The short rainy season in Tanzania begins in early November and lasts until early December. Afternoon showers are common, but mornings and evenings are usually clear. Trails might be slippery. The chances of rain decrease in December, making it a better choice.
ZANZIBAR
Short rains begin, and the temperature is higher. Showers are usually brief, providing a chance for a break at the bar or a massage before getting back in the sun.
One thing is certain - regardless of which month you choose for your trip to Tanzania, you will definitely experience the adventure of a lifetime.
